Developmental Evaluation Clinic

The Developmental Evaluation Clinic (DEC) provides diagnostic services to babies who were born prematurely. These babies are followed at regular intervals up until two years of age. Most of the children followed in this clinic are graduates of the Georgetown University Neonatal Clinic. A baby who is referred to DEC will be seen by a team of specialist including a developmental pediatrician, clinical psychologist and occupational therapist. The team uses informal observations and standardized assessment tools to assess the child’s development. Areas which are assessed include the baby’s growth, neurological functioning, cognitive/language abilities, and motor skills. Verbal feedback, a summary report and recommendations are provided at the time of the assessment. Referral to community resources is provided to families if it is determined that the child will benefit from early intervention services.
