Early Childhood Community-based Initiatives

Faculty at the Center for Child and Human Development have been providing direct services to young children and their families for many years.  Some of projects that the Center faculty is currently involved with are:

  • HIPPY: Home Instruction Program for Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) is a home-based early intervention program that helps parents create experiences for their children that lay the foundation for success in school and later life.  Funded by the D.C.  Office of Early Childhood Development, this project is being implemented in two communities in Ward 7 & 8 in partnership with the East River Family Strengthening Collaborative and the Far Southeast Family Strengthening Collaborative.
  • Knock on Every Door: is a program that provides developmental screening for young children at risk for delays who reside in emergency and transitional housing for homeless families in Washington DC.  Funded by the D.C. Early Intervention Program (Part C), faculty conduct developmental screenings in Spanish and English and community-based referrals are made to early care and education as well as primary care programs.
  • Bright Beginnings  : is a comprehensive child development program serving children whose families are in transitional housing or crisis shelters in Washington DC.   A multi-disciplinary team of faculty provide developmental assessments and interventions to children enrolled in this program.
